According to a report from Politico, Trump and McCarthy were very upset with each other. Trump was mad because McCarthy didn’t support him in the 2024 presidential election. In a recent interview, McCarthy even doubted if Trump could beat Joe Biden and become President again.

Trump apparently displayed his annoyance on the matter. There have been reports that he told his staff, “He needs to endorse me – today!” while going to a campaign event in New Hampshire. After the interview, McCarthy called Trump to say sorry, explaining that he misspoke, as sources told CNN.

A Background Check

To get Trump’s endorsement, McCarthy promised to help remove both of Trump’s impeachments in the House. Politico mentioned that McCarthy had agreed to do this before Congress takes a break in August, which is less than two weeks away.

In 2019, Trump was impeached by a House controlled by Democrats for abusing his power and blocking Congress. It was because he asked Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden and his son based on unproven corruption claims.

Then, in 2021, the House impeached Trump again, this time for his actions leading to the dangerous January 6 attack on the US Capitol by his supporters. But, both times, the Senate acquitted Trump because many Republicans voted in his favor, including McCarthy.

Current Situation

When a reporter asked McCarthy about the situation in the Capitol, he replied, “There’s no deal,” as Reuters reported.

McCarthy made these comments after the Politico report about the 2024 election. He said he’d work on passing laws to undo both of Trump’s impeachments, but there’s been no response from Trump’s representative yet.

On another topic, Trump, who’s the only president to be impeached twice, said on Tuesday that Special Counsel Jack Smith sent him a letter. It says there’s a grand jury investigating Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election. If charged, it would be the third time he’s accused of a crime since he left office.
