The legendary Durbar Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhavan stood witness to yet another auspicious ceremony. Justice Uday Umesh Lalit Lalit was sworn in as the current and the 49th Chief Justice Of India. The oath was administered by the 15th and currently serving President Of India, respected Droupadi Murmu.

This position was earlier held by Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana, who had also served as the Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh.

The esteemed Judge Lalit had earlier served as a Judge in the highest Court of the land, the Supreme Court of India. Justice Uday Lalit was one of the six senior counsels who were elevated to serve as judges at the SC.

The new Chief Justice is scheduled for a short tenure of 2.5 months, retiring on November 2022. A long list of constitutional matters that require adjudication however lies before the Supreme Court.

Justice Lalit comes from a family holding a legal legacy. His grandfather was an esteemed advocate in Solapur. The 90-year-old Umesh R. Lalit, his father, was a lawyer and a high court judge. One of Justice Lalit’s sons happens to be a lawyer, too.

He is accustomed to handling cases of magnitude. He was one of the judges in the Ram Mandir- Babri Masjid case of 2019 but had later discontinued for having dealt with a similar case in the 90s.

Elevation from the Bar to the highest judicial position of the land does not happen very often, as it has for Justice Lalit.

Justice Chandrachud is expected to serve as the next CJI after Justice Lalit retires on the 8th of November.
