A state judge on Friday instructed TikTok to comply with a records request. The request is from the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office as part of a multistate investigation.

They are looking into potential risks to young people posed by the app.

According to North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein, an ongoing investigation by attorneys general since 2022 revealed that TikTok possessed tens of thousands of recorded internal Zoom meetings.

Initially, the company did not disclose this information for almost a year and a half.

TikTok is mandated by the court order to provide lists of all Zoom recordings that could assist attorneys general in their inquiry, as stated by Stein.

Stein emphasized that TikTok cannot cherry-pick the laws it follows. The investigation to safeguard the state’s children is moving forward vigorously.

A TikTok representative announced on Friday the company’s intention to challenge the decision.

Earlier, TikTok had asserted it implements top-tier protections for youngsters, including a 60-minute usage limit for users under 18 and parental controls for teen accounts.

In October, Utah filed a lawsuit against TikTok, alleging that the platform deliberately encourages excessive screen time among young users, negatively impacting children. Indiana and Arkansas had earlier lodged comparable legal actions.

With over 150 million users in the United States, TikTok holds immense popularity among the youth.

According to Pew Research Center, 67% of American teens aged 13 to 17 utilize TikTok, with 16% of all teens stating they use the app almost continuously.
