There is a recent decision by a federal judge in New York on a case where the plaintiff’s gun rights were involved. It is on a case that led to a landmark ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court last year. The 2022 ruling expanded the gun rights of the individuals concerned.
There was also a monetary award of more than $447,000 in the form of attorneys’ fees and costs.
This amount, however is two-thirds less than what the plaintiffs had originally requested.
The case had posed a challenge to the constitutionality of New York state’s limits on concealed handgun carrying outside of the home.
The case was filed in 2018. They had argued to the Supreme Court in the year 2021. The law firms represented the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association. Other parties included Kirkland & Ellis, Bradley Arant Boult Cummings, Cooper & Kirk, and Kathleen McCaffrey Baynes.
The attorneys had requested a compensation amount of more than $1.2 million to the court.
This amount was made in the form of fees and costs for legal responsibilities of over 1,621 hours. These services were rendered over a span of several years.
However, U.S. District Judge Chief Brenda Sannes found that the hourly rates submitted through the request were not in adherence with the district’s norms. As a result, the lawsuit only received an amount that was lower than requested.
